What makes media technology delivery different
Media production networks carry signal as well as data. Where a facility adopts SMPTE ST 2110, video, audio and ancillary data travel as separate essence streams over a managed IP network, commonly as multicast, and devices lock to a common clock distributed by Precision Time Protocol under the profile defined in SMPTE ST 2059-2. Packet timing then becomes an on-air quality issue, so switch behaviour under load and redundant timing matter more than headline throughput. A single uncompressed video stream is measured in gigabits per second, so capacity is sized from the formats carried rather than from headcount.
Production spaces carry duties an office floor does not. BS 7909 is the code of practice for temporary electrical systems for entertainment and related purposes. It addresses the competence of the person responsible for a temporary system, and the testing and documentation that system requires. Overhead rigging used to lift loads falls under LOLER 1998, which requires thorough examination at defined intervals and a written record of each examination. Ofcom's Code on Television Access Services sets subtitling and audio description targets for relevant licensed services, so access assets sit inside the delivery workflow rather than at the end of it.
