What makes healthcare technology delivery different
Health IT is treated as a clinical risk, not only a technical one. In England, two NHS information standards divide the duty: DCB0129 applies to organisations that manufacture health IT systems, and DCB0160 applies to the health organisations that deploy and use them. Each requires a named clinical safety officer and a clinical safety case, supported by a hazard log, maintained across the life of the system and updated when it changes. Establishing early which party carries which obligation keeps that work out of the weeks before handover.
The second difference is scheduling. Wards and theatres run continuously, so infrastructure work is planned around clinical activity rather than convenient hours. Integration also crosses systems built decades apart, exchanging patient data through HL7 interfaces and, for imaging, DICOM. Connected medical devices complicate segmentation, because many cannot be patched or restarted on an ordinary IT cycle. Organisations with access to NHS patient data complete the Data Security and Protection Toolkit each year, and suppliers with the same access fall within its scope.
