What makes power generation technology different
A generating station is an electrical environment before it is an IT one. Switching transients and electromagnetic interference in substation and plant areas go beyond what commercial network hardware is built to tolerate, so equipment intended for those locations is specified and tested against electromagnetic immunity requirements that office equipment is not designed to meet. IEC 61850 defines how substation automation systems communicate, and its protection messaging carries transfer-time requirements measured in milliseconds, so a segment carrying protection traffic cannot be designed on general enterprise networking assumptions.
Regulation and site access shape the programme as much as the design does. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 place duties on employers, the self-employed and employees for work on or near electrical systems, so cable routes and installation methods in switchyards follow isolation and switching rules rather than convenience. Generation assets can fall within the scope of the Network and Information Systems Regulations 2018, which place security and incident-reporting duties on operators of essential services. The IEC 62443 series sets out a zones and conduits model for partitioning industrial automation and control systems by security requirement, with defined communication paths between them. Installation work is bounded by outage planning and permit-to-work.
